Description
Our project focuses on creating a composting, greenhouse, and market program. Launched in response to the NYC Department of Sanitation’s ongoing challenges with organic waste management, this initiative aims to establish a decentralized composting infrastructure within the next decade. By aligning with environmental justice goals, we aim to create local industrial jobs, reduce vehicle miles, and regenerate local soil, fostering a community-centered, sustainable future.
The project reuses existing industrial foundations and structures, integrating modern design elements to meet community needs. It features public learning spaces, a market on the west edge, and composting areas on the east, forming a closed-loop system where residents can buy, eat, and compost in one place.
We emphasize sustainable building practices by using Cross-Laminated Timber, minimizing concrete and steel usage, and remediating the site with compost soil produced on-site. Additionally, the project includes a hydroponic wall system and rainwater harvesting to manage water sustainably.
