Description
This project addresses the inefficiencies of food consumption in urban environments, where over 60% of edible foods are discarded, contributing to significant carbon emissions and urban challenges such as air quality issues and pest infestations. The proposed design envisions a net-zero compost-to-greenhouse facility on Governors Island, integrating waste management with urban agriculture. By utilizing the heat and CO2 generated from composting to enhance greenhouse agricultural yields, the project demonstrates a closed-loop system that links food waste and food production. In collaboration with Green Mountain Technology and Agrilab, this initiative prioritizes sustainability, reducing operational costs, enriching soil health, and fostering local employment opportunities. The design redefines urban composting, emphasizing ecological balance, resource efficiency, and resilience within the urban fabric.
